Earth Mother

SDP 6-9-11
The city of Sarasota has an extensive public art collection, including this ceramic clay piece, created by Jack Cartlidge in 1983, which sits outside City Hall. This one is called 'Earth Mother' and has always captured my attention since it gives the illusion of an oversized human reposing in the midst of this greenery and spanish moss. Cartlidge passed away several years ago and was well known in Sarasota, having created 20 percent of the city's public art collection. To learn more about public art in Sarasota click here.

Some days it seems like you can't turn a sharp corner in SRQ without bumping into a piece of art. Like that red horse. What's up with that? And that blue-green thing in the middle of 41 (by the bay)? Anyhow, this is one I had not seen, thanks for sharing! :)

What an odd placement for a statue, SRQ. It is a peaceful spot, but I can't decide if it is enhanced by the presence of this statue. So, tell me what I think, SRQ . . .

I wish we had more public art here in B'ham. I like yours!
