Cottonmouth

Cottonmouth Do you see it?

Cottonmouth

Also known as a water moccasin, this cottonmouth snake is venomous and, as you can see, blends in amazingly well with its surroundings. Yikes!  I was a healthy distance away, safe and sound on the boardwalk at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary when I snapped this pic.  I never would've seen it, except a sanctuary volunteer led us to it.  Next post...the predator that arrived nearby and some thought it was eyeing this snake for dinner.  Enjoy the day!

I've always thought it best to leave snakes alone. I saw one cottonmouth on a golf course here in Ocala, and a huge rattler on a golf course trail in Texas. Cottonmouths are scary as they are, I think, the only snake that will come after you. I've had fisherman friends who've had them chase the boat and also have dropped from a tree into the boat. Their venom is so strong that immediate counter measures are necessary following a bite. This is a super photo and I get the chills just looking at it.

How scary was that!!! At first I thought it was a bird's nest, then the zoom showed otherwise. So glad you were a good safe distance.

My least favourite creature. I like to keep my distance.

Very dangerous snake and they swim pretty fast. I used to see them all the time when I was a kid because my grandparents lived near a swamp and we would go fishing there. I've seen them hanging from tree limbs too.

This one does blend in quite well.

Great capture of the snake. I would have missed it too but then I would wonder why I am in a place that has snakes. :)

Yikes indeed! That camouflaging is one (of many) reasons snakes scare me. I don't think I'd ever have seen it. Thanks goodness for boardwalks.
