Tumblin' Down

Demolition of the old Sarasota Police building is underway. What a sight to see the walls tumblin' down! A technique known as wet demolition is being used.  That means a worker sprays water on the demolition area to keep the dust down.  The building was over 50 years old and by the time it closed in 2010 it was rather antiquated. The new police headquarters (which I showed here) can be seen in the background with the greenish-blue windows.

We've Moved!

It's not often you see a "We have moved!" sign outside a police department.  But, SPD officially moved yesterday.  The public portion of SPD, where people report issues and pick up records, moved around the corner to the new police headquarters.  The rest of the police department will continue moving over the next few weeks.   The new $40 million building was constructed after voters overwhelmingly approved an extra property tax a few years ago, right before the real estate market plummeted.  Rumor is...the old building (which really, really outlived its purpose) might be imploded.  I'm daydreaming about photo opps already.

Watch Your Speed

Today is the first day of school for the Sarasota County School District.  Watch your speed through the school zones.  A speeding ticket will cost you well over $100.  This location, right next to a school, is a very popular place for the Sarasota Police motorcycle unit to patrol and find speeders.  I drive this area every school day and encounter many aggressive drivers speeding through the neighborhood.
