As promised, we're back in Sarasota! This was a recent sunset right in the urban core at Bird Key Park on Sarasota Bay. As I've mentioned before, many times the best part of a sunset is after the sun goes down. What do you think? The pastels stretching across the sky and the bay that evening were amazing. I'm starting to contemplate the next Theme Day -- Revolution -- thanks to a reminder from Jack at Naples and Hartford in Season via the City Daily Photo Facebook page. This is going to be a challenging Theme Day! (Fingers crossed I can make it.) Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Lexie
I decided to take a quick drive across the Ringling Bridge to Bird Key Park last week after work. It was a gorgeous evening on Sarasota Bay, but this adorable goldendoodle (golden retriever-poodle mix) was only interested in the water. More specifically, something submerged. After staring at the bay with a concerned look for a moment or two, she plunged her head...
...and emerged sopping wet proudly clutching this prize: a moss covered rock. She had her human trained well. He would toss the rock just far enough into the bay to make it fun yet challenging to fetch it. (That's the golden retriever in her shining through.) They were visiting from Atlanta and really enjoying the area. But, the story doesn't end there. Somehow, Lexie cut her rear leg while frollicking, perhaps on a cluster of barnacles. Although she seemed oblivious to it, the open wound was bleeding enough to cause her humans concern. They thought it would be a good idea to have a veterinarian check it out. I suggested a terrific 24-hour clinic on the other side of town, but naturally, couldn't remember the name of it...or the exact road it's on. I drove off hoping they would find a good clinic and that Lexie would be okay. Well, imagine my surprise when I received an email from her human, Ken, the next day informing me that (somehow) they found the clinic I recommended -- and Lexie ended up needing four stitches. The vet, he said, was wonderful. How nice and considerate to email me! Lexie is now wearing a cone temporarily. Poor girl. Here's to a speedy recovery, Lexie, and a healthy future full of chasing rocks, quite possibly in Sarasota.

Theme Day: Photo of the Year
This photo was originally posted August 20, 2010. I selected it as my photo of the year because it turned out exactly how I envisioned it at the time, which is extremely unusual for me. Those in the City Daily Photo community around the world are posting their Photo of the Year. Happy New Year everyone! I'm looking forward to 2011 being filled with new adventures and great photo opportunities. Click here to view thumbnails from all participants.

Imhotep
Meet Imhotep! Since he's a basenji like my Mulligan, I had to say hello when I saw him at Bird Key Park. Like any good basenji, he was typically cat-like and aloof, more interested in sniffing the wind and grass and scanning the horizon than anything else. Basenjis are curious barkless hounds from Africa. So, his owner told me, he's named Imhotep, after the first architect of pyramids. I don't know about buildings, but basenjis are always designing a plan. They're so intelligent...so cunning....so playful....they can design and hatch a plot before you realize what's happened. Usually the plot has something to do with gleefully shredding paper --- a favorite basenji past time. (Strange but true.) Hmmm...I wonder what Imhotep was contemplating when I snapped this shot.

Watery Wednesday: Sail Away
Bird Key Park near downtown is a popular launch site for wind surfers. While it looks carefree, I think I lack the balance for something like that. Especially in the middle of the bay far, far away from land.

New & Improved
This is a small portion of the new and improved Bird Key Park. Lots of palm trees were added, plus benches, grass, a gazebo and a bike trail which continues several miles down to Lido Key. It's a popular place for runners, walkers and bikers to park before trekking over the Ringling Bridge. It's also a great spot for kayakers and windsurfers to launch into the bay. The park hasn't officially re-opened yet but it's been discovered and is getting lots of use.

Green Heron
I spotted this green heron clawing its way across the rocks at Bird Key Park in Sarasota. I love that elongated beak and maroon chest!
