Quintessential Florida

Island Gator

Alligator reposing on a small island at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.  This is quintessential old Florida at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

Island Gator

Look at those long, sharp claws. And menacing teeth!
Fun to observe gators in the wild...but always from a safe, healthy distance.

The gator looks like he or she is smirking.

They probably won't bother you if you don't bother them, but why take a chance, and furthermore, it may be their time of the month to eat! This is such an iconic Florida photo. We visited Corkscrew many years ago but saw no alligators on that occasion.

Their cousins live right here in lower Alabama. Lots of them here in similar environments around the Mobile Bay area. There have been more than a few tragedies involving peoples' dogs. I have no love for those critters, but your photo is fantastic.

I thought the teeth were bad enough. Add those claws and what a lethal reptile.
