We've Moved!

It's not often you see a "We have moved!" sign outside a police department.  But, SPD officially moved yesterday.  The public portion of SPD, where people report issues and pick up records, moved around the corner to the new police headquarters.  The rest of the police department will continue moving over the next few weeks.   The new $40 million building was constructed after voters overwhelmingly approved an extra property tax a few years ago, right before the real estate market plummeted.  Rumor is...the old building (which really, really outlived its purpose) might be imploded.  I'm daydreaming about photo opps already.

we need a new one bad, but voters keep voting it down. getting pics of it coming down would be neat.

I think that vote would be decidedly different today.

Oh, implosions are so cool - as long as it's buildings and not people!

I remember that old building--my ex-husband was a Sarasota police officer for about a year when he first got out of college. I used to bring him his lunch there the first year we were married--and no I won't say how long ago that was!

It must be quite an undertaking to move an entire police department. Just think of all the squad cars, guns, ammo, files, secretaries, coffee pots, donuts, two-way glass, trench coats, sirens, telephones, lieutenants, sergeants, etc., that had to be repositioned.

I'm glad they included their new address, although I try to avoid those places whenever possible. The coffee is terrible!

$40 million?! Oh my gosh, I wonder if voters knew they were approving that! Sorry to get political
:(

Yes, they did. They knew the old police station was falling apart and outdated technologically. Investing in improvements wasn't financially feasible. The new headquarters is nice, has many green features and was built to withstand a cat. 5 hurricane --- always a bonus.
