Perched

What is so gosh darn cute about a squirrel squatting on the edge of a tree trunk nibbling on a nut?    Although someone had scattered nuts and bird seed around this area in Ken Thompson Park, and there was plenty for everyone, this little fellow scampered to this perch with his prize as soon as he spotted me.

That tree is an Australian pine. They aren't native, they were introduced by John Ringling himself back at the beginning of the previous century. They've proliferated to the point where they are everywhere. They have little tiny hard cones that are a pain to walk on when you're at the beach. It takes a long time for them to get this big, and they don't have very deep roots, so this big one must be in a sheltered spot not to have blown over for so long.
