CLUCK

Fresh urban eggs anyone?   If you live in a residential neighborhood within the Sarasota city limits, you'll soon be allowed to raise up to four hens in your backyard.  The idea was proposed by a group called CLUCK --- Citizens Lobbying for Urban Chicken Keeping.  They say the hens' eggs will be a healthy inexpensive food source and will enhance sustainability in the city.  These organic eggs were purchased at a good 'ol fashioned grocery store.  And, yes, I have all my eggs (a dozen) in one basket.  I'd continue with the puns, but after following the chicken-egg controversy for months, I've realized they're not all they're cracked up to be.

What a great post you have here. I've been following the urban chicken controversy for a number of years. In Phoenix I had a neighbor who had a Peruvian chicken who laid blue and/or green eggs. In Phoenix hens are allowed, roosters are not! I think that may be the case in most cities. Now that I live in a rural setting, we buy most of our eggs from a neighbor who has a variety of chickens so we get brown eggs, pink eggs, white eggs, guinea eggs (little bitty ones).

Eggcellent photo! (sorry) I buy eggs from a custodian at the school where I work. He raises them on his property. The yolks are the most amazing color and the taste is so much richer than supermarket eggs. I don't know that I would want to raise my own. Chickens are messy.

You crack me up! Seriously though, that sounds like too much work especially since I don't eat that many eggs.

They're starting to allow keeping backyard chicken coops in the Vancouver area too. With that have started the complaints of neighbours' feathers getting ruffled because chickens are getting loose. I don't know what the big deal is about - certainly we can all get along and not squak about like chickens with their heads cut off. Yup, this subject is waaaay too easy for the puns! grin
