Going Vertical: 3rd Floor

You'll find these murals on the third floor of the Palm Ave. Parking Garage in downtown Sarasota.  Just over a year ago, the City Commission approved a public art project known as 'Going Vertical'. Immediately following the Chalk Festival some well known artists stayed in town to participate in the project, including a French artist simply known as MTO.   Themed murals were painted on each floor of the parking garage near the stairs and elevators.  Not only do visitors have something creative to look at, but it helps them remember where they parked their car.   This is the movie floor.  Over the next few weeks, we'll explore dance, theatre and others.  By the way, these murals by MTO haven't created any controversy, as opposed to this mural he painted on private property which ignited such a ruckus eventually it was removed.  To see other Monday Murals click here.

Most parking garages haver bare drab concrete walls. It's about time someone decided to brighten them up. Using murals is an excellent choice.

Neat idea! I don't have to use a parking garage often, but if I did, these murals would be appreciated.

Always helpful to have something unique to help remember where one is parked. Dark & moody.

What a great idea. Now if Wal-Mart would do something like that! Because I'm always losing my vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking garage. I have actually given some thought to purchasing one of those lime green or bright orange cars just to solve that problem!

That is such a brilliant idea. If only all dull parking garages would make their walls more memorable with art (I need all the help I can get remembering where I parked!:)

Makes me wonder if the owner didn't ask to see what he planned to paint from the beginning. This one in the parking lot is a bit ominous! Maybe a little scary for a dark parking lot, but I applaud the public art movement in your city. This is a brilliant idea.

I've never heard of murals in parking garages, but I think it's a wonderful idea. Sarasota seems to be a city doing many fine things.

I don't get this particular one, though. Do you know what the artist had in mind?

This is wonderful! As chalk work, I am surprised no one has been destructive to it. I'm so glad they haven't. Very nice!

I don't care much for parking garages; I feel a little vulnerable in them. It would be nice to have some original art to bring them to life, though these images probably wouldn't be very reassuring.

I think the concept is super and will accentuate boring dark walls in a car park. The content on this one puzzles me a tad.

Sure beats drab ! Didn't see where the controversy was in the other mural - some people just take things too seriously.

Interesting blog - I took a little tour.

We've had murals on garage doors, on outside walls of parking lots, but this is the first for inside a parking structures. A wonderful idea. Should we know who the guy is in the Berlin mural? I'm sure I don't know who he is. Looking forward to other contributions from this series. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.

Interesting murals. They're quite dark, in both color and theme. Something different, for certain!

Great way to use this space SRQ , I really liked his other work too, did they end up painting over it?
