Going Vertical: 2nd Floor

There were mixed reviews on the murals I shared last week from the Palm Ave. Parking Garage in downtown Sarasota.  Most people liked the concept of artwork in the garage, especially to help locate their car, but didn't care so much for the particular murals showcased.  So, this week we're moving to the second floor, also known as the dance floor.  This ballerina is my favorite mural in the garage.  It was inspired by the Sarasota Ballet and transformed a dull, grey concrete wall into something quite interesting and appealing.  It's also a bit of a trompe l'oeil.  It looks like you're looking down on the ballerina on the floor, when fact this is what you see when you're climbing up the stairs.   The mural is actually on the side of a wall, it's not on the floor.  I also really like the illusion that the ballerina is casting a shadow.  Pretty cool perspective.  To see other Monday Mural submissions click here.

Wow, that really fools the eye. Neat! It's interesting how something that appears to be so soft and delicate is in such a hard concrete environment.

The second floor mural is much more pleasing to the eyes and the mind.

I love this one too, SRQ. Fun to look at and get into prospective.

nice visual, but it does play tricks with your eyes, lol.

Oh, yes, this is really extraordinary! Funny how the eyes don't always see "reality." My first reaction was that this was looking down at a lower landing.

It's a beautiful mural, too!

Wow! I thought the ballerina was a sculpture at the foot of the stairs. Really appealing but not sure I'd know if I were going up or down! :)

I wondered how people could get past this sculpture, until I read your narrative I think it is brilliant and a terrific post!

What a surprise! I too thought I was looking down at a sculpture. That shadow really fools the eyes. You did a good job with the perspective. This seems less threatening to me than the other murals.

Yes, this one took me awhile to get my bearings as "on the floor" was the first impression I had to get out of my head. Well done mural and well done photo that caused some head scratching.

This is spectacular, SRQ. I am one of the ones who loves the idea and liked the painting from last week. And, I like this one even more. Kudos to Sarasota.

That's amazing~ I was trying to figure out the perspective but still didn't think I'd gotten it right until your post confirmed it. Why can't all garages do this? (re: your comment on the transportation ban in Boston's storm, I was puzzled too - however did they expect "essential personnel" to get to work? My sister almost borrowed x-country skis.)

Shades of Degas. Wonderful trompe l'oeil and with nicely executed "brush strokes." What a delightful image to walk up to. Kudos to Sarasota for sponsoring art on pedestrian walls. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
