Unknown

For quite awhile, I've had every intention to participate in Taphophile Tuesday. I even made a point to shoot some interesting cemetery scenes and file them away, like this one on Sanibel.  I was bicycling along a narrow path in the inner part of the island when I encountered a very small cemetery with approximately 12-15 graves. The plots were just feet from the bike path and separated by a low wooden fence. Immediately, I stopped to document the area and that's when I noticed this marker. I've never seen anything like it, have you?  It seems so mysterious and yet it's nice to know this unknown soul was taken care of in the end.  Now, back to Taphophile Tuesday. When at last I was ready to participate, wouldn't you know it...it doesn't exist anymore! Oh, well. At least it got me motivated, albeit a smidge too late for the meme but not for SDP.

Well, no, not really in a civilian graveyard. In military ones, often enough...

You wouldn't expect someone to be unknown who died not that long ago. Scary, a family was missing someone and never got resolution.

I was born in 64 so dont say 61 is a long time ago, LOL.

Nicely inscribed sign that someone took the time to make.

Just popped over from Its a Small Town Life and I just love your blog. Great pictures and lots of interesting tidbits. I'll be checking in regularly.

I like that you share the most interesting tidbits that so many of us pass right by without a second thought.

I remember in California that once or twice I read about a cop who'd be haunted by an unsolved case where the victim was never ID'd. A more recent one had reconstructed the victim's face so a picture could be posted. The techniques and info sharing today is far beyond 1961. But I can't say that I've seen a gravesite like this before.

I feel very sad for the family or anyone who knew him but will never know where he is buried. At least he received a nice commemorative marker.

I'll bet this happens more often than we imagine -- people dying without anyone knowing who they are -- but the burial and sign are probably what is unusual. Great find.

There is still a taphophile site, SRQ. The original one closed but a new owner is running it. Go take a look at http://marbletowns.wordpress.com/tag/taphophile-tragics/

Oh good, so now you will have a spot to link this very interesting find to SRQ.

I'm another one who was so sorry to see Taphophile Tuesday meet an early death (no pun intended). I've found some great cemetery angels lately. I think you would make an excellent host for a revival of that great meme. Come on, whaddaya say?

It's good to see this memorial. It's interesting, unusual, and good to know someone cared.

I, too, was disappointed to see Taphophile Tragics go away - and am happy that Jack posted a link to its new home!
