New Deal Gallery

Every three months, there's a new art exhibit at the Federal Building in downtown Sarasota.  The Sarasota community is a great supporter of the arts and it was thought this lobby would be a great place for a local art exhibit.  Isn't it better to have something interesting to look at when you're waiting for a meeting or just passing by?  Every time I'm here now, I make a point to check out the latest exhibit.  It's known as the "New Deal Gallery", since the building was constructed during the New Deal era.  Any local artist can submit their work.  There have been photographs, wood carvings, of course, paintings of all varieties on display.  Some I've really liked.  Others, not so much.  But, that's art...and it's a free exhibit.  Over the next couple days I'll show you a couple that caught my eye and see you what you think.  In the meantime, what do you think of Medusa Cat Lady in the left hand corner?  Creepy or cool?  Discuss.

A bit of both actually! I think it's such a good idea to brighten up places like this!

This is a delight! Foresight of the city fathers, which often is rare, but your community is lucky to have such a delightful place. Nothing better than having a visually charming space...great admission price, too!

My husband and I create "Friday Field Trips" to make sure that we do something cultural and spirit-lifting each week. Visits to galleries, museums, and concerts are not confined to Fridays, but knowing that we're planning a visit to something fun in the Twin Cities once a week on a regular basis gives me a lift!

Nice idea and great that you make a point to have a look at what is on offer! All the paintings on display here will undoubtedly appeal to someone's keen eye.

I'm from Miami so you will have to go a long way to creep me out. I wonder how many people come to the Federal Building for the art.

It looks like a surprisingly comfortable lobby. And it seems no one's taken the bait on Medusa Cat Lady. She reminds me of a variation of the Keane paintings that were popular way back in the 60s. Children with big, haunted eyes. Let's just say this wouldn't fit into my decor.

I have noticed that public buildings often display art. As you might imagine, the quality varies widely.
