Artist Depicting Art

How often do you go somewhere to take photos and much to your delight there's a tangential subject worth shooting? Well, that's what happened here. I made a point to visit the old Sarasota High School to take some photos of a new, unique art project which is being created on the front lawn to draw attention to the now empty building which one day, when enough funds are raised, will be transformed into the Sarasota Museum of Art. I snapped some photos and then I discovered an artist painting en pleine aire the subject I had been photographing. This is Susan Covert.  She's been an artist all her life and now teaches at Art Center Manatee in neighboring Bradenton.  (Check out her website here.)

She's been out here several times painting the new art installation as it has morphed.  We both agreed lighting is critical and that afternoon it just wasn't in the right position (at least not for yours truly wielding a camera).  The project is generating lots of interest and excitement.  So, what is that brown cluster?  And, why would a photographer, a painter and oodles of people be drawn to it?  It's stick art...and I'll show and explain it tomorrow.

I'm still dreaming about the opportunity to photograph a scene of an artist painting it. I envy you.

I've never had this opportunity yet. No I take that back, I was driving once and saw someone painting but could find nowhere to park the car... This is so cool!

Thanks for the artist's link; I enjoyed checking all of her internal links, too. What a wonderful gift and talent, which she has been perfecting many years. I hope that you buy one of her paintings to enjoy!

Funny story. I asked an painter if he minded if I took his picture while he painted a scene on Hollywood Beach. He very rudely told me only if I intended to buy his painting. I very politely stated my intent was to feature him in my blog but since he was not interested never mind. "Please come back" he yelled as I walked away finding some surrey bike riders to post that day. No doubt you have the more pleasant coast.

That's a classic look of and old 50s HS. They must have used a template. Where ever you go--- they are there.

Art imitates life or is it the reverse? Susan is very talented.

What a great shot that second photo is. It says so many things. You made the best out of what looks like a gray day. I experienced one of those earlier this week when the sky was just so washed out it made for disappointing photos. Oh, well, there's other days, I suppose!

That will be a great museum, whenever it happens. I can see some interesting things taking form in the stick art. I'm looking forward to seeing more!
