Red Wing Blackbird

SDP 2-16-12
I stalked several red wing blackbirds at the celery fields recently in hopes of capturing a photo to show you that, yes indeed, they do have red on their wing.  Ta-dah!  The red is quite noticeable when they're in flight, but capturing such a photo proved to be elusive on this venture.  I was just happy this guy remained still long enough for me to get this picture.

Not heard of this bird before, we have plenty of blackbirds here in Yorkshire but no red wings. I was out yesterday trying to get a photo of a robin but with my 70-200it is just not big enough, unless I can get much closer.

I love your red wing blackbirds: I first saw them in California and was blown away. Much jollier than our funereal blackbirds but ours do have bright yellow beaks, at least the males do and our have a wonderful song.

Red & gold, like little officers. :)

You have a good eye. We are getting over ran with grackles, I think. There are thousands of them, mostly at intersections and power poles.

Great shot. They certainly don't like to pose, do they!

I LOVE red wing blackbirds. They can often be seen snapping up bugs around the rice fields in the part of Texas where I grew up. Fantastic shot.

When they arrive back up north - that is springtime! Love to hear their song.
