Stations of the Cross

Every Good Friday, just after sunrise, the Church of the Redeemer and the Sarasota Ministerial Association host the Stations of the Cross pilgrimage down the middle of Main Street.  It's quite a sight to see.  This year, the Church of the Redeemer's youth minister, Rev. David Bumsted, carried the cross the entire route as hundreds of Sarasotans followed and paused for prayer at 14 stations as they remembered and reflected on Jesus' journey to the cross.  When the SDP Editor-in-Chief was doling out this assignment, I actually volunteered (despite the early hour) since I've always wanted to attend.  Unfortunately, I could only make it to two stations before I had to dash off to work.  Next year, I think I'll carve out time for the whole pilgrimage.  Happy Easter!

Colorful Sunday

Between the bright red door and the colorful impatiens, I had to stop and snap this shot of Church of the Redeemer in downtown Sarasota. I've featured the inside of the church several times (click here to check out the SDP archives)  --- so, here's the entrance! Whenever I'm nearby with my camera, it's just too irresistible not to photograph. Hope your Sunday is bright and peaceful.

Happy Easter

This is one of the many pretty stained glass windows inside Church of the Redeemer in downtown.  When I'm looking for peace and solitude in Sarasota, this is at the top of my list.  May you have a peaceful, joyous day.  Happy Easter!

Peace of Glass

This is one of the stained glass windows in the vestibule of Church of the Redeemer in downtown near the bayfront.  I like the colorful reflections and the railing leading up to the second floor.  It's amazing the peace that stained glass can bring to a room, particularly in a church.

Sanctuary Shadows

It was early evening and the sun was shining brilliantly through the stained glass windows, warming the pews in the sanctuary of Church of the Redeemer Episcopalian Church in downtown Sarasota, when I took this photo.   The first time I ventured inside the church, a few weeks ago, I captured this photo in the vestibule.   At the time, an evening service was taking place, thwarting my plans of checking out the sanctuary.  So, I vowed to return --- and I'm glad I did so soon.  It's quaint and serene with a small second floor gallery where I snapped this shot.  For those who saw yesterday's post, this church is located directly across the street from Dolphin Tower, the condo high rise which is now vacant due to a structural failure.

Theme Day: Reflections

This is what you see when you enter the vestibule of Church of the Redeemer Episcopalian Church in downtown Sarasota.  I was a bit surprised to hear an early evening service going on, since it wasn't indicated on the the marquee outside.  So, I quietly snapped a couple of photos before tiptoeing away.  I'm looking forward to returning and seeing the sanctuary.  This is part of the City Daily Photo theme day "Reflections".    Click here to view thumbnails for all participants
