Soaring Again (Sort of)

Like the bald eagle, SDP shall soar again!  That's right...we're BACK!  Okay, that was a bit dramatic. We're actually limping along; however, it seems all our digital photo files have been recovered. Hip-hip-hooray!   I lost the corresponding data (names, dates, places etc.), but I have the files and that's what's important, right?

I think have a good course of action going forward: (1) never, ever, ever use iPhoto again for so many files (2) invest in a new computer and photo software (3) set up a raid backup system.   I have a lot of work to do...transferring tens of thousands of files, doing more research etc.  In the meantime, the Editor-in-Chief has given the order to resume posting whenever possible.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, thoughts and input about your computer systems. If you haven't chimed in, I'm still gathering information, so please let me know what works for you.

Regarding this photo, I snapped it just over two weeks ago in N. Ft. Myers.  (Rumor has it the SDP Editor-in-Chief had an uncanny resemblance to Harriet screeching when she learned about the computer crash.  WHAT?!)  So happy to see these guys on my computer again!

I'm happy to see them too. I've been so busy, I haven't checked up on the eagles in a long time. What a great action shot!
Glad to hear you're resolving the photo issues and that you have a plan to move forward. :)

Glad you're back and have been able to recover your photos. That must have been a nightmare! Good luck with your research on a backup solution, please let us know what you solution you choose. I'm sure we could all benefit.

Be careful with RAID. It sounds automatic, but there are plenty of pitfalls, especially if it's anything more than just plain mirroring. But I'm sure you'll do your research. :)

I love the photo and had to laugh at your last paragraph! Hooray for making progress!! Fingers crossed yo make much more going forward (the last time I faced a painful crash like this, it also took a while, I mainly did things weekends, and now still dedicate some weekends to manually backing up to the larger extra drive).

Welcome back! Glad that you recovered the photos. It's not easy trying to figure out what to do with thousands of digital pictures.

I use Photoshop CS3 and a few other lesser photo programs. My main computer is an iMac. I back everything to an external hard drive connected to the Mac; to 2 internal hard drives on a PC as well as an external hard drive connected to the PC.

Sure, it's overkill, but it doesn't take that much time and I don't worry too much about one particular link in the chain crashing.

Hallelujah! It is good seeing you here again. That potential loss is terrifying. I don't have as good a backup system as I should, and I switched from PC to Mac a year ago. Your experience is telling me that I really need to sit down with the Apple Store or an independent tech and develop a backup plan.

If I had that problem, Harriet's shriek would be a smile in comparison. I do a really good imitation of furious.

Welcome back! I'm glad you've at least got the images, though losing the data would be hard to swallow. . .

This is a great shot. The fish in the tallons is fabulous.

I sent you an email earlier today - hope it made it through any spam filters you may have.

What a nightmare SRQ..you've certainly been through the mill in the last few weeks. It's been very interesting reading through the comments to see what the others are doing. I have a feeling I may be hugely under protected..I simply work away on my PC, do a back up whenever I remember and pray and hope for the best? Something tells me I should rethink things. What a great picture of the eagles, I've become slightly addicted to the eagle cam site..so fascinating. Keep us up to scratch on how you're going, stay calm and know that we're all sending good vibes that all will be 100% again really soon.

So pleased you managed to find your files. Modern technology is all well and good, but so easy to lose everything.

Since I couldn't find your name listed anywhere here, I'll just say very nice products and discoveries. Stay safe.
