11th Hour...11th Day...11th Month

Today is Veterans' Day in the U.S.  This is one of a handful of holidays which falls on the same day every year.  Actually, this one lands at the same time.  Veterans' Day is recognized at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.  That's when fighting stopped in 1918 to end World War I.  This is a photo of the veterans' memorial statue in J.D. Hamel Park in downtown Sarasota.  I'm off to the parade and ceremony.  Thank a veteran today for their service...I will!

In Europe (at least in Allied countries) they get the day off. I wish we had that here too. But I also salute our veterans. Nice shot for today!

Very nice shot for today.
In France and many European countries today is the commemoration of the end of WWI. The last French veteran died last year at a grand old age (well over 100) so this was the first 11/11 without them.
So yes, holiday, but work tomorrow, so off to bed now!

Oh, and in some towns in the South of Germany, 11/11 11:00 AM is the beginning of several months of carnival. An extremely old tradition.

I knew you would post a good tribute to these my heros..There is one WW I story I will never forget about how both the Germans and the Allies put down their weapons on Christmas eve and met on the ravaged battlefield to celebrate Christmas.

Wars. What good do they do? Why couldn't we all get along and treat each other like human beings? I wonder when that day will come.

Enjoy the weekend - whatever the weather!

Many thanks for visiting Norwich Daily Photo and leaving your comment. Come visit again tomorrow!
